Hurricane Irene Survivors Get More Time!

Deadline Extended to Apply For Assistance!

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved a request for an extension of the deadline that NC Hurricane Irene survivors can register with FEMA and apply for low-interest disaster loans from the Small Business Administration (SBA).

The new deadline is November 30th.

According to the North Carolina Emergency Management website, an extension was requested due to continued registrations indicating some survivors are still assessing hurricane damage.

NCBAM contacted both FEMA and the Small Business Administration (SBA) in an effort to gain valuable information for aging adults affected by the storm. We were told that it's important that anyone with hurricane damage (of any kind) register with FEMA by calling 1-800-621-3362 (TTY: 800-462-7585). Survivors can also go online to www.DisasterAssistance.gov. Even if you've applied for help with the American Red Cross or another volunteer organization, registering with FEMA is essential to getting assistance for recovery.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) offers low interest loans to disaster victims for physical losses up to its loan limits. Despite it's name, the SBA serves individuals with disaster-related needs as well as businesses. Individuals needing disaster assistance need to apply before the deadline. For more information, call the SBA's customer service center at 800-659-2955 (800-877-8339 for hearing impaired). Loan applications can be downloaded or completed online from the SBA website at www.sba.gov. Every caller will speak with an SBA agent.
