10 Passages of Promise
Scripture is full of passages of promise – God’s words that give us hope and direction. For aging adults, the Bible remains the place to discover refreshment and vitality for everyday living. This brochure will lift your heart as you embrace God’s purpose for your life. Here is how it works: read the suggested biblical passage slowly and intently. Answer the self-assessment questions. Bring to mind and ponder the biblical text and your responses often.
1. Salvation: Psalm 91:16 NASB “With a long life I will satisfy him And let him see My salvation.”
Accept Jesus Christ as your Savior today and experience the saving grace of God. God is the giver of all life – both earthly life and eternal life. God provides our earthly life as preparation for eternal life in heaven. Think about the long life God provides through salvation. How will you use your long life to bless others? Give thanks to God for your salvation – both now and for eternity.
2. Comfort: Numbers 6:24-26 NASB “The LORD bless you and keep you; The LORD make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance on you, And give you peace.”
God, our strong provider, carries us over the rough places in life and speaks words of peace and blessing to our wounded hearts. Think about a time in your life when God carried you through a rough place and you felt God’s warm embrace. Give thanks to God now for that time. Thank God for the assurance of His warm embrace in the future.
3. Protection: Isaiah 41:10 NKJV “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will uphold you. . .”
What fears do you face today? How do these fears drain you mentally or physically? How can you trust God’s presence and power in the midst of these fears? How will you rely on God’s strength today?
4. Inner Strength: 2 Corinthians 4:16 NKJV Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.
How have you lost heart? What physical limitations, pain, loss, heartache, or fears depress you today and cloud your future? Remember, God is continually rebuilding and restoring you inwardly. How will you trust and take joy in God’s inner strength and renewal today? Remember, God is daily renewing your soul and preparing you for eternity.
5. Rooted in God: Psalm 92:13-15 NKJV Those who are planted in the house of the LORD Shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bear fruit in old age; They shall be fresh and flourishing, To declare that the LORD is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
Where are you planted? Where do you find strength, balance, nurture, and direction in life? Those who deliberately plant themselves in God will flourish, grow, and bear fruit, even in old age. God is righteous and will grow righteousness in those who draw life from Him. How will you plant yourself in God today?
6. God’s Faithfulness: Joshua 14:10 NASB “Now behold, the LORD has let me live, just as He spoke, these forty-five years, from the time that the LORD spoke this word to Moses, when Israel walked in the wilderness; and now behold, I am eighty-five years old today.”
Thank God for your life and for every year you have enjoyed. Look at your life. How has it been pleasing to God? How will you bring pleasure to God today? Ask God to show you why you have been blessed with longevity. Ask God to give you strength to fulfill His divine plan for you.
7. Fear Not: Psalm 71:9 NASB Do not cast me off in the time of old age; Do not forsake me when my strength fails.
Have you ever worried that in your old age you might not be wanted? Have you ever feared that you would not be valued and desired when you lose productivity? If so, then you are not alone. Throughout the years, many people have experienced those same concerns. But fear not, God’s love will not fail. God’s love for you will continue all the days of your life. Take joy and praise God for His great love for the young and the old.
8. God’s Perfection: Proverbs 16:31 NASB A gray head is a crown of glory; It is found in the way of righteousness.
The years come and go and they usually take a toll on us. Maybe aging has left you with dreaded wrinkles, bent shoulders, or gray hair. What physical changes have you experienced with increased years? These changes indicate much more than outward aging. They also reveal years of opportunities for spiritual growth. How has God worked within you through the years? What has God developed within you? Thank God for all the times of growth you have experienced through the years. How will you remain open to God’s continuing work in your life?
9. God’s Purpose: Psalm 71:18 NASB And even when I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me, Until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to all who are to come.
Have you ever wondered why you’re here? God has you here for a reason. Perhaps there is something you need to say to someone. Maybe there is something God wants to teach others through you. You can surely make a difference in the life of another as you share of God’s blessings. What do you need to speak about today? How will you share of God’s power in your life? Who will you tell about the Lord?
10. Grandparents: Proverbs 17:6 NASB Grandchildren are the crown of old men, And the glory of sons is their fathers.
God blesses people in many different ways. One of the special blessings in life are grandchildren. Think about each of your grandchildren and thank God for the unique and special person each one is. How can you share your love with each one today? How can you be an encouragement to each of them? Even if you don’t have grandchildren of your own, you can thank God for special grandchildren in your life.
