6 Statistics to Know

The Changing Face of North Carolina

•   North Carolinians age 60 today are expected to live, on average, an additional 22.5 years to almost 83 years old.

•   The number of North Carolinians age 65 and older is expected to grow 76% over the next 20 years.

•   The number of North Carolinians age 85 and older is expected to grow 50% over the next 20 years.

A frail-aging population concerns government planners and healthcare agencies:

•   The healthcare cost per capita for persons over 65 is three to five times greater than for persons under age 65.

•   The 85+ population will increase 150% by 2030. Fifty percent of this population will need long-term care.

•   The number of people age 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease in North Carolina has increased 31% in the last 10 years, and is expected to increase 69% over the next 20 years.
