Servant Volunteers
Too Active to be Old
Posted by Paige Richardson in category Churches Civic Groups Individuals/Care Teams on November 17, 2011
A senior adult leader recently asked, “How do I get Baby Boomers to participate in our senior adult ministry? They don’t think of themselves as senior citizens.” Baby Boomers are not like their parents. They exercise twice as much as previous generations and half are expected to work part-time after retirement. These are people on the move.
I suggested the senior adult leader focus on activity. Use their energy. Encourage these well-aging adults to work as servant volunteers, helping those who are frail. A Harvard Study titled Reinventing Aging suggests churches can foster social networks encouraging members to connect with each other and the larger community.
